Will a teeth whitening kit damage bonding on front teeth?
I'm getting my two front teeth bonded in two weeks, but I whiten my teeth every few weeks and want to keep them white after the bonding. I know that the whitening bleach doesn't stick to bonding so I'm going to whiten before I get it done. But When I need to redo my teeth is it is ok to put the bleach on the bonding or can it be damaged. I want to keep my white teeth but I don't want my front teeth to be a different shade than my others. Help!

Teeth Discoloration???
Recently my teeth have started to become discolored. usually my teeth are all one color but recently they have started to get white splotches on the bottom half. I think that it could be because I am a swimmer or because I have been sick and the plaque that gets on them overnight might be what is causing the discoloration the last thing might be due to the fact that I have been using whitening tooth paste and it is splotching my teeth. I have had 4 pulled and I am trying to figure out if this tooth coming in is a wisdom tooth or if it is a normal tooth (I have 22 teeth without counting wisdom teeth)

i hate it.. but anyways.
im getting "shark teeth" with 2 of my teeth..
one is a molar and its pushed the baby one completly on its side pointing towards the inside of my mouth, but i cant get it out..
and the other is my right canine and the baby one isnt very loose but the adult one is kinda big...
i really want to get my braces on as soon as possible so i can get them off fast. i dont want them in my senior pictures and i dont know how long ill have to have my braces on... im in 9th grade.
so please give me a way to get my teeth out. the loose and not the loose.. but mainly the "shark" ones.
please a way besides the dentist if you can, thats going to be very expensive and the braces are already going to cost a bunch..

You have to go to a dentist. The pain from pulling them by yourself could be enough to make you faint, plus you could get an infection and end up dying from it. Also, if you damage the bone in your jaw by trying to pull them yourself, you could end up disfigured and your teeth would look even worse. For gosh sakes go to the dentist. This isn't something you can do yourself girlfriend. TALK TO YOUR PARENTS!!!

My daughter, now 3 months old, Started tething at 2 months. The doctor said she could teeth for months, or wake up one day with a tooth. My cousin had 2 teeth by the time he was 3 1/2 months, I was just wondering how soon your kids actually got teeth. Thanks!!

Gap Between teeth.?
i had braces for four years, just go them off during the summer. First the dentist gave me a mouth piece, that i was suppose to wear 8 hours a day, to keep the teeth from moivng. now i have a retainer. I am noticing that i am getting a gap between my two front teeth, and my tooth is like shifting towards the other tooth. and tooth is slightly larger than the other.. I really dont want braces again but it seems my two front teeth are moving again.?

Babies teeth??
Hi just wondering about my 10 week old baby boys gums and teeth. I know its not impossible for him to be getting teeth now but it is unlikely. Obviously this is my first baby so i am unsure on how the gums should look. i can see teeth. the shape and the whiteness where the tooth looks very close to the surface of the gum. My mum, who has 4 children says he is not teething but i just cant stop looking at them and thinking they look like teeth ready to break through??? advice please????

i can see my baby teeth when he was as young as 4 mo... but he started teething since he was 6 mo... how did i know, ? he was so cranky ... even though everything else is fine (no sick, so fever, no feeding problems, just some sleep problems on nite time)
but until now he is 10 mo, he hasn't any teeth yet
if he is dribbling a lot and out of sorts, he could be teething .. consult with docter about it

Reply:i doubt that he is teething already, but if he is just wait it out. it's not that big of a deal... you will know when he's teething. most babies will be more fussy, won't want to eat as much and will drool a lot. why are you so concerned about it? that's probably just the way his gums look... it's not teeth. talk to his pediatrician if you are so worried about it.
Reply:My son is 19months old and I remember thinking that too. I think it is just normal b/c their teeth are just below the gum line. Some babies get teeth as early as 3 months so it could be possibe. If he is drooling a lot and putting his hands in his mouth more that is a sign of teething. When they first broke through there were just two itty bitty holes in her gums in which you could see a speck of white. There was no outline of the rest of the tooth visible under the gum, it just grew up through the holes.
You might be seeing Epstein pearls. Or other random bumps on his gums. Of course, it is possible that he is actually teething.

i can see my baby teeth when he was as young as 4 mo... but he started teething since he was 6 mo... how did i know, ? he was so cranky ... even though everything else is fine (no sick, so fever, no feeding problems, just some sleep problems on nite time)
but until now he is 10 mo, he hasn't any teeth yet
if he is dribbling a lot and out of sorts, he could be teething .. consult with docter about it

Reply:i doubt that he is teething already, but if he is just wait it out. it's not that big of a deal... you will know when he's teething. most babies will be more fussy, won't want to eat as much and will drool a lot. why are you so concerned about it? that's probably just the way his gums look... it's not teeth. talk to his pediatrician if you are so worried about it.

my son (18 months) has 4 teeth on the top upper and 2 more coming in on top, the "meat teeth". he has one "meat tooth" coming in on the bottom. then he has no other teeth on the bottom and has no signs of them coming in. is this strange? we have no dental insurance, i thought i would ask here first. dentist is the last resort.

Grinding teeth and mobility?
Hello. I asked this question a couple hours ago and got only 1 response which is good but I am hoping for more peoples input.
I pick up my grinding splint on Wednesday cause I grind my teeth at night and sometimes during the day. I have noticed that some of my teeth move alittle and I have asked question on YahooAnswers before regarding that. What I would like to know is, if your teeth move more then they should cause the ligament is stretched due to grinding, does it harden back up after the reason they are loose is taken away? When people get braces, they have to wear a retainer till the ligament harden up around the teeth. Is that the same for grinders who wear a guard at night? Will teeth that might be very slightly mobile harden up over time when the tension of grinding is gone?

Bleaching my teeth..is there something going wrong??
yesterday i went to the dentist and got my home bleaching kit and i did everything the dentist told me to do. This morning after bleaching my teeth it didn't seem any whiter than before. Is there supposed to be any difference after the first day?
And after taking the molds out my teeth.. how long after can i brush my teeth or eat somethin?
Also afterwards at school i realized that on some of my teeth there are white lines at the bottom of my teeth is that supposed to happen?
Ohh and after how many days of using this kit will my teeth have an obvious difference in colour?

It could take a couple of days to notice a difference. You should brush your teeth when you remove your trays. The white lines are normal, this is called the "splotchy stage" which means that some parts of your enamel are responding differently to the bleaching and are bleaching faster. If you continue you will see that soon the rest of your tooth will catch up.
If you have deep staining it could take a longer time to bleach your teeth, but the at-home kit is the best method for whitening. While it may take longer than in-office bleaching, it actually whitens more and will give you less side effects. This is professional bleaching.

I just herd an american saying that brits have bad teeth, where did they get that from? In fact alot of british people have very clean teeth and everybody here brushes their teeth, i guess this is just another american attempt to dominate which isn't noticed, its because they are fustrated cause the world teese them about being so fat, but THAT is true, (they are the fattest nation) and look at mcdonalds and burgerking, so they get angry and make up some crappy joke about bad teeth, Yh ok whats next, another shameful attempt of american humor, Friends is bad enough... Crooked baby teeth is this unusual?
My son is 14 months old and has the top 2 teeth and 3 bottom teeth . The top 2 teeth are straight with a fairly big gap between and the bottom 2 teeth are crooked. He has never had a dummy and doesn't suck his thumb. He only has 1 bottle a day in the evening so hes not sucking on the bottle either. None of our family have crooked or gappy teeth. I am concerned even though he will lose these teeth that this is possibility of things to come is this true?

Teeth brackets falling out?
Hey, I just had brackets put on my teeth yesturday. No wires yet.
Anyways, at night I brushed my teeth for two minutes like they said to and then went to sleep. When I woke up it felt like I was missing a bracket or two on the right side, and when I look in the mirror there is a tooth without a bracket between two teeth that do have brackets.
So I'm worried that I may have lost the bracket sleeping or something by biting while sleeping. Is it possible for your brackets to just fall out like that?
And does it cost money to get a new bracket? How much?

6 teeth in 3 months?
My son has lost 6 teeth in the last few months, 2 of them this week alone!!! Is this normal? I see where one that came out a week or so ago is already having an adult tooth come in, but right now, he only has 2 of his 8 front teeth completely there. Those 2 are permanent teeth. Another permanent tooth is about half way in. He eats a fairly balanced diet when he's not being mr. picky. He gets loads of vitamins C though, he loves oranges and gets juice and a multivitamin everyday. I can't think of what could be wrong, if anything. Can someone please help to ease my mind, or let me know what to do?

Well first of all I am asuming the teeth you are getting pulled are baby teeth because that is what I had done. First, the shot. I got 4 and didn't even feel them. The rub a gel on your gums where the shot will be and then they do it. I couldn't feel a thing. (probably because I was practically crying and I was so scared) So if there is pain, it is very minor.
After you have waited about 10 minutes after the novacaine was given, they will pull the teeth. They use something that lools like pliers(don't let them scare you) and just simply pull them out. When they did mine (I had 2 pulled) I was waiting for some major pain, but they showed me the teeth they had already pulled before I knew they ever started! Completely painless for me! Way more of a mental pain and fear! Your mouth stays numb for a few hours afterward, not a big deal at all. It's kinda fun!
As for your tooth that hurts, I am not sure if it is a cavity or not. (try putting ice directly on it, amd see it if is sensitive. if it is, it's probably a cavity) If it is a cavity, They wouldn't fill it that same day unless it was a really rare occasion.

I was scared too...haha, but they gave me the shot..and I felt alot of pressure, and I told him it hurt and to give me another shot. And they did, so if you feel anything---stop them. and tell them to give you another one. haha, don't smoke or drink through a straw afterwards either for a while..and I am not going to lie, I cried. But I am okay now...haha, and I wish you luck!!!! Remember, it will help you out in the long run tho :)

You can get nitrous oxide (laughing gas) too if you want to, a lot of people do and it helps to take their mind off of what's going on. Ask your dentist for a sample of sensodyne. Brush your teeth with it, but don't rinse, it needs to stay on the tooth for as long as possible. Try it for a couple weeks to see if it makes a difference.

Having the cavity filled was much more involved than having the tooth pulled. The tooth being pulled reminded me of the sensation of having a hair tweezed without the sharp pain. Just the feeling of something sliding from its place.
Be sure to follow their directions for care afterward very carefully. I used an ice pack and took some pain killer before the numbing wore off, and I didn't have any swelling or pain.
Keep it in perspective. A week from tomorrow the teeth being pulled will just be a memory. You'll do great!

Wisdom teeth coming in?
Ive been having slight discomfort o nand off for a couple years now but it alwasy goes away within a couple days. i already have too many teeth for my mouth and this week i started to have pain again. i noticed a corner protruding in the back of my upper right side and i am absolutely positive it is trying to puch out the tooth under it.
Is it easier to have your molars removed and let the wisdom teeth come down naturally, or do they somehow remove the teeth from the side so not to disturb the teeth that are already in use?

Upper teeth braces?
Is it possible just to get braces for your upper teeth? I have a diastema (teeth gap) that I don't like. I've gone to the Orthodonthist and was told the cost for full braces (whole mouth) would be about $5600. I initially wanted to do my whole mouth (top and bottom teeth) because I do have gaps on my lower teeth as well, but they're much smaller and less noticeable, and they never show when I smile, so I'm not really bothered by those. So to save money, now I'm just considering getting braces for my upper teeth to close that gap only. Has anyone ever done this? About how much will it cost?...maybe half of $5600 (if I'm just doing the upper part)? I know I'll have to go to the Ortho again to ask, but just wondering if it'll be possible first! Thanks

I need a second opinion on Zoom teeth whitening.
Based on what you know about it, do you think it is effective?
I have dark yellow stains in between teeth and something else "dysplasia" that my dentist mentioned, I have white spots randomly over more than a few of my teeth. Pretty much, I have different levels on staining on my teeth and wondering if the whitening will even the color out, even if some start out as a darker stain than others.
And what's the peoper name for the white spots found on my teeth? Does whitening get that stuff out, since it's NOT really antibiotics/drink/food/smoking stains.
Also been reading reviews saying Zoom is not effective for people white white spots.
Also my Dentist says there is a "Life time gaurantee". Does that mean free retouching in office when necessary? Also, they will send me home with an at home bleaching kit after the procedure. It'll be $400...let me know your thoughts.

The white stains are just calcium spots. It can be made from many different thing. Either hereditary, after braces, medication that your mom could have taken when she was pregnant, all kinds of different factors.
Zoom does work very well. I dont know about the lifetime guarantee, but no you can not get free touch ups. Or I never heard of that. It works best on yellow stained teeth, and you should probably notice about 2 shades whiter depending on how stained they are. The whitening can not get the spots out, but it can dramatically reduce the appearance of it, by blending in the rest of your teeth. and yes you will get custom made bleaching trays to go home with, and that is how you will do your touch ups.
i dont know what "dysplasia" is. Maybe it was dysthmia that you heard. That is just a space between your front teeth. Not saying that dysplasia is not anything, but i am just not familiar with the term. I have been doing zoom on my patients for 5 years, and they are always happy with the results.

Based on what you know about it, do you think it is effective?
I have dark yellow stains in between teeth and something else "dysplasia" that my dentist mentioned, I have white spots randomly over more than a few of my teeth. Pretty much, I have different levels on staining on my teeth and wondering if the whitening will even the color out, even if some start out as a darker stain than others.
And what's the peoper name for the white spots found on my teeth? Does whitening get that stuff out, since it's NOT really antibiotics/drink/food/smoking stains.
Also been reading reviews saying Zoom is not effective for people white white spots.
Also my Dentist says there is a "Life time gaurantee". Does that mean free retouching in office when necessary? Also, they will send me home with an at home bleaching kit after the procedure. It'll be $400...let me know your thoughts.

The white stains are just calcium spots. It can be made from many different thing. Either hereditary, after braces, medication that your mom could have taken when she was pregnant, all kinds of different factors.
Zoom does work very well. I dont know about the lifetime guarantee, but no you can not get free touch ups. Or I never heard of that. It works best on yellow stained teeth, and you should probably notice about 2 shades whiter depending on how stained they are. The whitening can not get the spots out, but it can dramatically reduce the appearance of it, by blending in the rest of your teeth. and yes you will get custom made bleaching trays to go home with, and that is how you will do your touch ups.
i dont know what "dysplasia" is. Maybe it was dysthmia that you heard. That is just a space between your front teeth. Not saying that dysplasia is not anything, but i am just not familiar with the term. I have been doing zoom on my patients for 5 years, and they are always happy with the results.

My teeth moved after i got my wisdom teeth removed!?
I just got my wisdom teeth removed on last friday and now my lower teeth have shifted. the teeth in the middle of my lower set of teeth are pushing against eachother and one is being pushed out and ones being pushed in! what can i do to fix this? or once i have healed will they move back?? thank you!

Are teeth whiteners really safe for the teeth??
I was told by an assisant dentist that teeth whiteners are not really a good thing for teeth as it eventually breaks down the fibres within the tooth itself as the inner part is more fragile to it. Thus the tooth will eventually weaken. Have you heard this too?

I had to see an emergency dentist yesterday cos I had toothache, it was my back bottom tooth and it had a really bad cavity in it. The dentist drilled it a lot and put in a filling, but he said I might need a root canal and that I will definitely need a crown on my tooth.
How will I know if it needs a root canal or not? And what's a crown? I'm only 16, is it normal to need stuff like this at my age?
He said I have a lot of other cavities that need fixed as well :o( but I've got an appointment with a regular dentist in 6 weeks time. Will it be alright to leave the cavities for another 6 weeks before they get fixed or will they get worse? I'm scared they end up hurting like this other tooth did. And if I need a lot of fillings done, can they put me to sleep before they do them? I really don't like going to the dentist and he says I need a LOT of work done on my teeth, I'm really scared now :o(

A crown is basically a cap for your tooth.
Your dentist will let you know if you need a root canal after further evaluation.
It's not "normal" to need this at 16, but it's not "abnormal" either. Some people have naturally weak teeth, or are genetically predisposed to tooth problems. Or you might have poor dental hygiene which you can improve and avoid further problems like this.
Reply:Basically, you need a root canal if the cavity is very deep and affects the nerve of the tooth. Sometimes, if the cavity goes very close to the nerve, you can get away with just a filling in it, but sometimes in drilling the tooth etc it irritates the nerve and the nerve will die, and you'll need to get a root canal. It's basically like a more extensive filling, where the dentist has to go right into the roots of the tooth and get rid of the nerve. It shouldn't hurt any more than getting a regular filling, but it takes a lot longer.
You probably will need a crown because the cavity was so bad that the filling has had to be very big, taking up a big area of your tooth. That makes the tooth weak and it can break. Basically, a crown is a kind of jacket that goes completely over the tooth to stop it from breaking.
In terms of the other work you're going to need done on your teeth, try not to worry too much about it. I know that's easier said than done, but I hadn't been to the dentist in a long time (10 years) and when I finally went with toothache I had to have an extraction, two root canals, and fillings in all except two of my molars. I was absolutely terrified at first, but after I had my first appointment for a couple of fillings I realised that it really wasn't half as bad as I had expected. I didn't feel anything after the injections, and I listened to my MP3 player to try to drown out the noise of the drill. After that first appointment I wasn't nearly as scared about getting the rest of my treatment done. And I'm so glad now I've had it all done because it means I can stop worrying about my teeth and I don't have to suffer any more pain.
So be brave and get those teeth fixed before they get worse. I know you're scared, but I promise it won't be as bad as you think, and once it's all done you can forget about it and just concentrate on taking care of your teeth so you don't end up in the same situation again. Good luck hun!

A crown covers the tooth and protects it - they are nothing to worry about either. Reply:hi kate, i'm a dental nurse and what jen says is correct you have nothing to worry about Root cananl treatments do take a long time to do and are very fiddly but that's the dentists problem not yours, once ure numb you shouldn't feel anything and if you do they can put more anaesthetic in, all you have to do is tell the dentist that ure nervous and they'll talk you through everything and make sure you understand before starting. As for the rest of the cavitys you probably would be better to try and get an earlier appointment but if they don't hurt you should be ok. You wouldn't be able to be put to sleep to have fillings done they only put you to sleep for extractions but there is the option of sedation which just makes you feel very relaxed but u would still be awake but try to have them done without it won't be as bad as you think. hope this helps.

Wisdom teeth removed without being sedated?
I'm deathly afriad of being sedated (put to sleep) and I may need to have my wisdom teeth removed soon. None of them are impacted, they've all almost fully grown in like my other teeth. Have any of you ever had any wisdom teeth extracted on just local anaesthesia and not had to be put to sleep? I have a pretty high threshhold for pain, and I don't mind the gore at all (had teeth pulled before %26amp; root canal done while awake). But everyone tells me to get put to sleep for my wisdom teeth for some reason. I think I'd rather just let the dentist punch me in the face as hard as he could to knock me out!

hey u dont have to put to sleep to go for any tooth extraction ( even wisdom tooth ) its just ur tooth which shud be sedated .... if local anesthisa can do the job then why to go for general ...we put the patient to sleep only when the surgery has to be done to a special patient(handicap pt.)otherwise NO NEED ...n about the pain ... it varies from patient to patient ... few complain of pain n few dnt after the extraction of wisdom tooth ... but analgesic can do wonders .... n ur dental surgeon will definately prescribe u the medicine after surgery ...so dont worry ... no get ur wisdom extracted while u r awake .. !

The pain really kicks in later in the day when the shot has worn off and you have a gaping hole in your mouth. But, if the doctor gives you a script for pain killers have it filled before the numbness wears off. You'll be fine being awake.
Reply:NO, you dont have to be put under to have your wisdome teeth removed. your dentist may prefer otherwise as their standard procedure. but since their is no impaction or infections it should be straight forward to complete under local anethesia/freezing

Most patients are under the impression that they are totally put to sleep as if they are having surgery in the operating room when this is not the case. An IV is administered to the patient to put them into a 'twilight' sort of sleep. The patient is still able to open their mouth wider if the dentist asks them to do so, etc... yet generally they never remember a thing that happens during the procedure... just as you don't remember life as an infant... it happened... and you reacted... you just don't remember it. Of course, there is some risk... there is risk with any procedure.. there is even risk in just receiving a dental injection of anesthetic to numb you... but the risk is minimal. And another good thing about the sedation is that once you get home you sleep for a really, really long time so you're not awake to have to deal with the soreness, numbness, etc. I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed by an oral surgeon when I was 20 years old... way before I entered the dental field and I was scared to death myself... I even sat in the chair before the procedure crying and telling the dentist how scared I was... I had a very good doctor and he talked to me in a very soothing voice while he administered the IV and before I knew it I was waking up and the procedure was over. Really, you have nothing to worry about. Hope this helped put you at ease.

Cavities between teeth?
So I guess I haven't been flossing as often as I should.......I went to the dentist today for my annual checkup, she did some x-rays and turns out I have 3 cavities, all between my teeth - in fact they're like double cavities because they're affecting both teeth each time which really sucks, it means technically she'll be drilling and filling SIX teeth!!
Anyway, I've had a few cavities filled before, but they've all been in the top off my teeth, on the chewing surface, this is the first time I've had any between my teeth. I was just wondering, how do they actually fill cavities between your teeth? And where do they drill? Do they drill in from the side or what?

Best teeth whitening for $25 or under?
Okay so I'm 13 years old and I drink alot of coffee so my teeth aren't very white. I also have enamelhypoplasia which means my enamel is thin and my teeth are sensitive. I was thinking about doing this using collgate liquid whitener.
But I heard it makes your teeth porus from the bleach.
How true is this?
If I do this and then drink coffee down the road, would it make things worse because now my teeth are porus and will stain even worse (even though coffee usually stains teeth on it's own, will having 'porus' teeth make it worse)?

If i get my wisdom teeth removed - will my teeth straighten out?
I had four teeth removed when i was younger, as i have a small jaw. So thanks to that, my teeth ended up pretty straight.
Now my wisdom teeth are coming through.
They are growing unevenly though, the left wisdom tooth is half way through, whereas the right is just starting to appear.. now as a result of that....... my teeth have gone ever so slightly off too the side. Meaning, like...... they look a bit wonky. I can only really notice it in photo's, but it's bugging me. And i don't want it to get worse. And i really do not want a brace.
If i get the wisdom teeth removed - will the teeth straighten back out? Or will a brace be needed?
I would ask the dentist, but i'm a bit of a dentalphobe =/

Reply:Typically, no, your teeth will not return to their "natural" position. In most of my patients, once the third molars (wisdom teeth) start to shift things around, there is no shifting back, even after extraction.
But, I do urge you to get your third molars taken care of as soon as possible!! Too many people wait until the last minute and end up with severe impactions and also decaying the teeth in front as well. If you have a fear of dentists, I suggest you make an appointment for a consultation (you will need to contact an oral surgeon, usually) and if you are not comfortable with that particular doctor, then keep moving on until you find someone you're comfortable with. Consultations are free, so it won't cost to shop around.

Edit: as for having them removed, I had 2 of mine pulled, not quite so bad, lots of Novocaine, and plenty of nitrous. The other 2, the roots weren't straight, and had to be removed surgically. That was the best, I slept thru the whole thing!

When I went to the dentist he put in white fillings to cover the dark brown ugly decay that showed in the front of my mouth when I spoke or smiled. Now I'm noticing a two-tone color on each tooth. Teeth whitening /stains ? help?
I've always had these weird stains on my teeth. the stains are only on like 5 or 6 of my front teeth. i've had them since i was a baby....most of my teeth grew in with the stains on them already. my mom said it had something to do wih me having to take iron supplements or something when i was infant. they aren't like brown stains, like they don't look like smoking stains...they are a whitish yellow and some of them cover almost my whole tooth. some of them just look like a spot or stripe that was painted on . i was just wondering if anyone could give me ideas on how to make them less noticeable or whiten them a bit. i've trip a few store-bought whitening products like crest but they just whiten around the stains, they don't actually get rid of the stains.help???

In Japan I found out that they don't have the standards we do for teeth. At first I thought it was totally rediculous, on the cover of a magazine is a beautiful japanese supermodel but when she smiles her teeth are all crooked. In America we care so much about it that we cement metal machines in our mouths to make sure they are perfectly straight, and go for porcelin veners and bleeching and it's pretty crazy. I was raised in America so of course I am attracted to nice teeth, but I'm not sure why really. I brush my teeth of course I want them clean, you don't want an infection or rotten tooth. That hurts and it smells bad. I understand brushing but where did this other standard come about straightness and whiteness?

Reply:When I was a teenager back in the 60's,mostly the kids with money had braces, or even spent much time at the dentist office. Through the years peoples over all interest in their teeth has become more and more important.
Dentures aren't as much, the acceptable alternative as they once were.
Reply:I think the answer combines two things.
First of all, the hygiene issue. Bright white teeth, and those that are straight, are apparent (if not real) proof of a healthy mouth, so when it became possible to brush/floss/mouthwash/flouridate/etc our mouths, it became a 'standard' to have pretty teeth to show off how well a person takes care of them.
I think it might also be a societal thing. Those who could, when the technology was new, afford to buy brushes, paste, floss, pay for dental trips, etc, were those who were more well off. As a result, pretty teeth are proof (real or apparent) of a well-to-do family and one that a person might want to marry into, if the opportunity existed.
Because there has been no medical or societal flaw found in having straight, white teeth, there has been no movement away from looking for those things in a prospective date/mate.
Reply:That's an interesting question, I haven't really thought about that before. I think that we're so obsessed over our appearances that super-straight, whiter-than-white teeth are expected. I live in southern California where we're all extremely body-conscious and you won't see anyone around here with crooked, yellow teeth. I went back to my old elementary school to get some volunteer hours in for my high school requirements and noticed how almost every single kid has braces. I never had braces because I was blessed with straight teeth but have caught myself worrying about how ONE little tooth overlaps another the slightest bit. It's weird, I guess that we just assume that if we want to come off as someone who takes care of themselves, that means having perfectly straight, white teeth.

You are not supposed to alter the body that God gave you. However, as "western" standards are becoming more prevalent there, you'll see the younger generation with straightened teeth, piercings, tattoos and so forth.

Asians don't usually go for medical help unless they really have to, they believe in dealing with mild sickness themselves and only go to doctors when their own treatment doesn't help. They are more aware about the necessity of regular check-ups nowadays, but total awareness is still a long time coming. When it comes to dentists, asians don't usually go to a dentist just for their 6-months check-ups. They go if they have toothache, have a filling, and that's the end of it until another tooth bites the dust.
Added to that, the health system in Japan works in the way that doctors who provides more treatments to more patients gets more income. Hence, each dental treatments doesn't cost much, but the quality is not very good. This arrangement is not very beneficial for orthodentists who has to provide long-term treatments for fewer patients.

Reply:Nice, clean-looking teeth are super pretty, or incredibly hott. No one wants a crooked looking cave or a toilet as a mouth.
Reply:Because clean and healthy teeth usually means a clean and healthy person. Someone who had bad oral hygiene is more likely to be unclean at other things as well.
And when your teeth are crooked, it is a little harder to floss and keep them clean.

Reply:When I was a teenager back in the 60's,mostly the kids with money had braces, or even spent much time at the dentist office. Through the years peoples over all interest in their teeth has become more and more important.
Dentures aren't as much, the acceptable alternative as they once were.
Reply:I think the answer combines two things.
First of all, the hygiene issue. Bright white teeth, and those that are straight, are apparent (if not real) proof of a healthy mouth, so when it became possible to brush/floss/mouthwash/flouridate/etc our mouths, it became a 'standard' to have pretty teeth to show off how well a person takes care of them.
I think it might also be a societal thing. Those who could, when the technology was new, afford to buy brushes, paste, floss, pay for dental trips, etc, were those who were more well off. As a result, pretty teeth are proof (real or apparent) of a well-to-do family and one that a person might want to marry into, if the opportunity existed.
Because there has been no medical or societal flaw found in having straight, white teeth, there has been no movement away from looking for those things in a prospective date/mate.
Reply:That's an interesting question, I haven't really thought about that before. I think that we're so obsessed over our appearances that super-straight, whiter-than-white teeth are expected. I live in southern California where we're all extremely body-conscious and you won't see anyone around here with crooked, yellow teeth. I went back to my old elementary school to get some volunteer hours in for my high school requirements and noticed how almost every single kid has braces. I never had braces because I was blessed with straight teeth but have caught myself worrying about how ONE little tooth overlaps another the slightest bit. It's weird, I guess that we just assume that if we want to come off as someone who takes care of themselves, that means having perfectly straight, white teeth.

Reply:I'm not sure where the standard for straightening and whitening teeth came from. I know in Japan they don't do it for religious reasons. You are not supposed to alter the body that God gave you. However, as "western" standards are becoming more prevalent there, you'll see the younger generation with straightened teeth, piercings, tattoos and so forth.
Reply:yes. nice teeth are attractive. I met a guy I talked to online. He was attractive and nice looking. He had a nice smile, but when he did his teeth were really discolored, sort of yellow.
that's about all I can think of when I think of him are his yellow teeth. I feel sort of bad, I don't want to judge him that way.
I like to see that a person of the opposite sex cares enough to try and take care of their teeth. It can be expensive, but is soooo worth it.
I've noticed that nice looking teeth seems to be a tell tale sign of financial status, or social status. People who dont make as much money or have insurance definatly dont seem to have very good looking teeth. (this is my opinion, if you think Im being politically incorrect... well I'm sorry.)
Reply:You should probably find out about how the health system works in Japan and how asians view doctors in general.
Asians don't usually go for medical help unless they really have to, they believe in dealing with mild sickness themselves and only go to doctors when their own treatment doesn't help. They are more aware about the necessity of regular check-ups nowadays, but total awareness is still a long time coming. When it comes to dentists, asians don't usually go to a dentist just for their 6-months check-ups. They go if they have toothache, have a filling, and that's the end of it until another tooth bites the dust.
Added to that, the health system in Japan works in the way that doctors who provides more treatments to more patients gets more income. Hence, each dental treatments doesn't cost much, but the quality is not very good. This arrangement is not very beneficial for orthodentists who has to provide long-term treatments for fewer patients.

Childs teeth alignment for 5 1/2 yr old?
My son lost one of his front two teeth (bottom) a few months ago and today he lost the one right next to it. The new tooth (from the first lost tooth) is coming out a little behind where the other tooth was. Is this normal or do the teeth normally come out in the same spot?
