Ok I admit British teeth are bad. But aren't American teeth just vain and unnatural?

Yes it's true, we Brits don't have teeth anywhere near as nice as you Americans. It's down to a number of things. Lots of British people just can't be bothered to go to a dentist. Other people want to go but can't because we don't have enough dentists. But the thing is every country has people who don't go to the dentist enough.

The main reason there is such a stereotype about British teeth is because most British people, even the ones who look after their teeth well, don't go out and get cosmetic procedures done to them all the time. In the USA, bleaching, braces, veneers and other procedures are all commonplace. But all of these things are cosmetic, unncecessary, and sometimes they are actually bad for your teeth. These procedures just aren't common in Britain because as a society we are just less vain about teeth.

So next time you want to insult a Brit, think of a better one than the old teeth comment, we know we have bad teeth, but we just don't care - and that's a good thing.

Ok I admit British teeth are bad. But aren't American teeth just vain and unnatural?
#1: Are you a dentist, a dental assistant, or in any other position in the dental field? If not, how would you know that bleaching, braces, veneers and other common procedures are "actually bad for your teeth? Can you back that up with double blind studies, or is that your opinion?

The reason Americans spend alot of money on our teeth, is because unlike you apparently, we do care what our teeth look like. It is called "taking pride in your appearance".

This does not make an American vain, anymore than it would make a Brit vain if they decided to do cosmetic dentistry.

It is really sad that you can admit you have bad teeth and that your reason for not fixing them has nothing to do with money, but is just because you don't care.

I don't think every Brit wants you speaking on their behalf.

And I still think it is sad that you admit it.
Reply:Also, it's not just looking nice... good looking teeth translate into healthy teeth, which means they don't rot or hurt when we eat. It not only looks nice... it feels nice. Report It

Reply:Sigh, is your inferiority complex really so bad that you became passionate about teeth?

Haha - point taken. I bow to you.
Reply:most people who do those weird things to their teeth are on tv.

my dentist said i didnt need braces, i just brush them every day
Reply:It's the water....and flouride
Reply:I've never heard of you Brits getting dissed for bad teeth. Around here, we tend to trash West Virginians for that sort of thing.
Reply:Not nice of you to say that it's all Americans think. I happen to be an American living in the UK, for a year now and "teeth" has never crossed my mind. It's not the teeth I think about but their lack of manners and good will towards anyone but their own. So please get off your soap box and think about what you are saying before preaching to us people okay?

Cheers
Reply:I agree with what Peg said. Your making generalization about people. Talk about your own teeth just because they bad doesn't mean others don't go to denist ok
Reply:Braces are used to keep the teeth in alignment and prevent more serious periodontal and TMJ problems. Despite what you see on TV not all Americans use the veeneers and bleachings. Being less vain is not the same thing as letting your teeth rot and make your breath stink. Neither are we all fat or all skinny or all umm anything at all for that matter. And if you think the Queen et al have all their own natural teeth, well we have a bridge here in Brookllyn we have been trying to sell for a while. Not a dental bridge either.
Reply:It's a cultural thing. In some cultures they put V-grooves in their teeth, or have metal steel crowns because they think they look beautiful.

From a dentist point of view, it seems to me that many people don't fully understand the physical risks of having teeth altered. Patients have to be fully informed of risks, or you are asking for a lawsuit if anything goes wrong, whether it's your fault or just a general risk.

I have a policy of only advising patients of absolute functional needs, such as cavities, gum disease or other damaging problems. 90% of braces are done for appearance. You don't do braces for TMJ or perio.

However, if the PATIENT raises a concern about their appearance like tooth whitening or braces, then we'll discuss it. It's not my place to tell people that their looks are unsatisfactory (according to my cultural view).

So let's live and let live, everyone.
Reply:I am sooo vain...I am getting 8 veneers next week!! And getting all my teeth bleached--- WOO HOOOO!! Gotta love living in the USA!!!
Reply:Probably, having good teeth don't change the fact that Americans are fat.
