Teeth repair???

how exactly does a dentist repair teeth? say...if someone chip their tooth, they file them down but is that it?? they just file them down? is there any other way for them to fix teeth? like if someone chip their tooth, is there another way to fix it other then filing their teeth? maybe "filling" in or something?

Teeth repair???
Sometimes you can get away with just filing the tooth down to make it smooth again. If this cannot be done then they will put a filling in the tooth. The worst case is they have to do a crown on the tooth because there is not enough tooth structure left to hold the filling. This procedure takes two visits. At the first visit they will reshape the tooth and take an impression of the tooth to send it to the lab to have the crown made. They will make you a temporary crown to wear that they cement to the remaining tooth. It covers the whole tooth. The permanent crown takes a few weeks to come back from the lab. At the second visit they will take the temporary crown off and try in the permanent crown to make sure that it fits properly. They may adjust it some but if everything looks good then they will cement the crown in and you are done.
Reply:It really depends on the chip and the tooth, as to what a dentist will or can do for repair. For minor chipping, smoothing out the rough edge is all that needs doing. If a chip is actually removing some enamel, then they can do a veneer, sort of a coating to fill it in. For more severe damage, sometimes a cap or crown is the best choice. It just depends on the injury, and to evaluate that, you need to see the dentist and discuss your options.
Reply:a small chip of a tooth can be fixed without losing the tooth. when my son sheared off his front tooth in a hockey game, he had to have a root canal and fake tooth replaced it. temporarily...he still needs a "permanent" fake tooth put in place. I slipped and fell on ice and broke 2 teeth, no root canals, but they were filed down and had caps put on. there are many ways to correct the issue. get at least a couple of opinions, don't go with the first dentist you are able to see. good luck to you.
